The self-scanned solid state image sensor comes in two versions,
i.e., a one-dimensional row, or linear array, and a two-dimensional matrix,
or area array.
There are basically four areas of application for the linear
arrays.
The smaller arrays, 64 to 512 pixels, are used in optical character recognition
and point-of-sale applications.
